Jewish Prayer music in Leeds 16 – 23 June 2015

From Tuesday 16th to Tuesday 23rd June, internationally revered cantors, choirs and scholars will be in town – first for an International Conference on Jewish Liturgical Music at the University of Leeds (16th – 19th)  followed by the 10th annual European Cantors Convention (21st – 23rd).

The Sabbath inbetween 19th/20th will resound with glorious voices at two of Leeds most prestigious orthodox synagogues, the United Hebrew Congregation and Etz Chaim Synagogue.

For the public there are two concerts and an illustrated lecture.  Members of the public may also attend Sabbath services and conference and convention sessions.

Illustrated talk The Music of Jewish Prayer

Eliyahu Schleifer, Professor of Sacred Music and Director of the School of Sacred Music at HUC-JIR/Jerusalem, a keynote speaker will give a public lecture exploring the components that make up the traditional music of the synagogue as a terrain with archeological layers which interact and influence each other.

He will cover Psalmody, Cantillation of Scripture, Nusach, Chants and Melodies for Poetry, “Tunes from Sinai” and Cantorial Improvisations.

Concert One Little Goat: New discoveries in Jewish choral music
The Clothworkers Consort of Leeds (www.ccl.leeds.ac.uk) conducted by Bryan White will perform Jewish choral music featuring music recently recovered from formal and informal archives around the world, some of it under the auspices of the AHRC-funded project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive’.

Works will include the Cantata Chad Gadya (One Little Goat) by Dowid Ajzensztadt, V’shomru by Froim Spektor, Kinah by Karoly Fraknoi, and music by composers whose music ended up in South Africa, Australia and other places.

New works will also feature, including Chatzi Kaddish by Leeds University composer Ian Sapiro.
